    This financial innovation made Croesus rich beyond imagination; his wealth was so legendary that 2500 years later the phrase ‘as rich as Croesus’ is still in the English lexicon.

    Pharaoh Ptolemy I was an enlightened ruler of Egypt who understood the true value of knowledge. He had the Great Library at Alexandria built and it amassed over time the entire knowledge of the ancient world for his kingdom. When the library was burnt down, this marked the start of the 1000 years of barbarism and ignorance now referred to as the Dark Ages.

    According to the Confucian classics, King Yao was one of the 3 Sage Rulers, and inventor of the Chinese calendar and the chess game Go. A wise ruler, he abdicated his throne to Shun, a capable minister, rather than have his subjects suffer under his unruly son Danzhu. This has become the archetypal example of choosing a worthy person for the task if you want the job done right.

    King Hammurabi introduced the world’s first comprehensive set of laws, imposing the order required for future civilizations to rise. All in his kingdom of Babylon had to submit to Hammurabi’s Code of 282 laws which presumed innocence until guilt was proven, and allowed both the accuser and accused to provide evidence and treated all parties as equals under the law.
